Muir beaten to punch on Fifth Avenue

-

ATHLETICS: Laura Muir came off second best in her penultimate race of 2016 after losing out to Olympic bronze medallist Jenny Simpson at the New Balance Fifth Avenue Mile in New York.

The Scot, in America just 48 hours after clinching the overall Diamond League title in Zurich, was edged out in a two-way sprint for the line with the American who won the race for the fifth time.

But Muir (pictured), who will close her campaign at next Saturday’s Great City Games in Newcastle, recorded an unofficial UK best of 4:18.5 — with Eilish McColgan coming 12th.

Eric Jenkins held off Olympic champion Matt Centrowitz to win the men’s race, with Edinburgh duo Chris O’Hare and Jake Wightman sixth and 16th respectively.
