Porcher would love to do a ‘Narey’

- By Mark Woods

IT’S been more three decades since David Narey’s famous toe poke saw a Scot trouble the back of Brazil’s net on a major stage. But David Porcher admits he’s been thinking of nothing else since the draw for the Paralympic football tournament set up a clash for the British team against the hosts in the competition’s first game.

The former Scotland Under-16 cap has imagined the contest over and over in his head for months.

‘It’s what I’ve dreamt about,’ the striker, 19, said. ‘Last minute, 0-0, and I score against Brazil.’

With the seven-a-side event featuring players with cerebral palsy, Porcher was thrilled to get the call at the start of 2016 offering him a chance to join the GB squad. His hopes of hitting the big time, he’d thought, had gone when Hibs released him after five years in their youth ranks and he was left to wonder if the small muscle disability down his right side was the difference between a shot at Easter Road and the exit door. ‘It probably was,’ he admits. ‘When they got relegated they let quite a few boys go, about ten of us. I don’t know if I was just unlucky.’
