Princes plan TV charity special

- By Katie Nicholl

WILLIAM and Kate have dedicated much of the past year trying to break down the stigma of mental health, and spent the final day of their Canada tour visiting charities that specialise in the field. Now The Mail on Sunday can reveal the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and Prince Harry, are to stage a special BBC documentary to talk about their new charity initiative. Next year will mark the 20th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death, and the trio’s charity work is seen as a continuation of her humanitarian legacy.

The Royals, who launched the Heads Together campaign with a team of eight UK mental health charities earlier this year, will discuss its work on the programme.

The Duke has focused his attention on young male suicide in Britain and has opened up about the impact of the death of his mother, left, saying not a day goes past when he doesn’t think about her.

Prince Harry has spoken in a similar vein, and earlier this year told the BBC that he regretted not speaking about Diana’s death sooner.

A source close to William, Kate and Harry said that breaking down the taboos associated with mental health was a priority for them.

The source told The Mail on Sunday: ‘They believe that getting help, early intervention and feeling able to talk about mental health is vital.’

Heads Together is the beneficiary of next April’s Virgin Money London Marathon and the documentary is set to be broadcast shortly after the race.

A spokesman confirmed William, Harry and Kate would be taking part in the BBC programme, but said: ‘It is not about the principals, but about the marathon and the campaign’s role.’
