Zara invents the reins-free phone!

- By Jonathan Petre

HANDS-FREE phones have proved a major boon for safety-conscious drivers wanting to talk while at the wheel of the car.

Now Zara Phillips has used her ingenuity to create her own version of the device so she can chat while riding her horse.

The Queen’s granddaughter was spotted at an equestrian event on Friday with a mobile phone tucked under the strap of her riding helmet, allowing her to hold a conversation while keeping both hands firmly on the reins.

The horse-mad former Olympian, who was competing in the Dauntsey Park Horse Trials in Wiltshire, was seen smiling broadly as she spoke over the navy blue mobile just after she had completed the dressage section on her horse Gladstone.

The 35-yearold royal, who is married to former England rugby union star Mike Tindall, was also seen during a break in the competition taking two black labradors for a walk. Wearing dark glasses and dressed in traditional beige jodhpurs covered with bright red knee-length socks, she stopped to chat to spectators as she strolled around the park. Zara is a regular at the popular three-day event, and took part two years ago with her now two-year-old daughter Mia watching from her pushchair. Last year she was pictured making a quick change of outfit in the middle of a field before competing in the cross-country section. An accomplished equestrian, she won a silver medal as part of the Great Britain eventing team at the 2012 London Olympics, but she was not selected for Rio. The daughter of Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips, she is the second oldest grandchild of the Queen and Prince Philip.
