Bristol City set to swoop for Waghorn in window

- By Fraser Mackie

BRISTOL CITY are set to move for Rangers striker Martyn Waghorn in the next transfer window.

The Ibrox top scorer was the subject of interest from the Championship club approaching August’s deadline after they sold Jonathan Kodjia to Aston Villa for £11million.

However, no business was done and Waghorn stayed at Rangers to sample the Scottish top flight.

City, in fifth place after 11 games, have gone on to prove themselves genuine candidates for promotion to the Premier League.

On-loan Chelsea teenager Tammy Abraham has been a sensation for Lee Johnson’s side, carrying the scoring load with 11 goals.

They wish to strengthen further in January for a serious shot at going up and will target a permanent transfer for former Leicester and Wigan forward Waghorn.

The 26-year-old did not follow James Tavernier, Rob Kiernan and Wes Foderingham in accepting a new, extended Rangers contract this summer.

His deal expires at the end of next season but City are in determined mood to land their target soon and intend to return to Rangers with a mid-season offer.

Waghorn carried on his prolific 28-goal form of last term by netting on his first four outings, including against Hamilton in the league opener.

He suffered a hamstring injury that afternoon that kept him out for the next five weeks.

Despite returning in scoring style with a hat-trick against Queen of the South in the Betfred Cup, he has not been able to give another goals lift to a difficult Ladbrokes Premiership start for Rangers.
