Resounding victory so sweet for the Cherries

-

BOURNEMOUTH crushed Hull City 6-1 at the Vitality Stadium to register the club’s biggest ever win since promotion to the Premier League last season.

Eddie Howe’s side were ruthless in demolishing Hull as Mike Phelan’s first game in charge since becoming manager on a permanent basis turned into a nightmare.

Charlie Daniels gave the Cherries the lead after five minutes only for Ryan Mason to equalise. Steve Cook restored the hosts’ lead before Junior Stanislas netted from the penalty spot in first-half injury time. The former West Ham player added his second on the hour mark before Callum Wilson and Dan Gosling scored in the last ten minutes to rub salt into the Tigers’ wounds.

Howe said: ‘We got the goals today that some of our attacking players deserved and probably our season deserved.

‘We were very clinical and when the chances came we finished them off — which hasn’t always been the case this season.’

Angry Hull boss Phelan slammed his players. ‘I feel very embarrassed,’ he said.

‘I’ve got a team here who show what they can do when they want to. We’ve got to grow up.

‘What we’ve done today is not good enough.’

Elsewhere, Stoke City picked up their first win of the season thanks to a double from Joe Allen in a 2-0 win over Sunderland.

The Welsh midfielder headed Mark Hughes’ men in front after eight minutes and struck just before the break with a low shot through a ruck of bodies from the edge of the area.

That result left winless Sunderland at the foot of the table with David Moyes’ side picking up just two points from their first eight matches.

The Scot said: ‘We need to get better in all areas.

‘It was an inexperienced team out there but we’re trying to get better.’

Meanwhile, West Ham snatched their first away win of the season after beating Crystal Palace 1-0 at Selhurst Park.

Manuel Lanzini converted Aaron Cresswell’s cross for the only goal of the game in 19 minutes.

Christian Benteke missed a penalty on the stroke of half-time for Palace.

Cresswell was then sent off after picking up two yellow cards in 51 seconds in the 75th minute, but Slaven Bilic’s men held on.

Defender Winston Reid said: ‘We showed out there that we are a team all fighting for each other — this result will lift us.’
