Comic accused of ‘obscene tirade’
Still Game star Kiernan ‘swore at barmaid’
STILL Game star Ford Kiernan has been accused of making vulgar sexual remarks to a barmaid.
The 54-year-old actor allegedly directed a string of ‘obscene and degrading’ comments towards the woman at the Shilling Brewery Company in Glasgow.
He is facing a further charge of acting in a threatening or abusive manner by shouting and swearing at the barmaid, who cannot be named for legal reasons.
Glasgow Sheriff Court papers claim the offences took place on August 1 last year at the premises in the city’s West George Street.
They say the comedian’s alleged outburst in the city centre bar was ‘likely to cause fear or alarm’.
Kiernan – who plays pensioner Jack Jarvis alongside Greg Hemphill as Victor McDade in the sitcom – was not in court on Thursday.
He was represented by Douglas McAllister, who asked for the case to be continued without plea for a period of four weeks.
Procurator fiscal depute Alan McArthur told the court: ‘Mr McAllister spoke to me prior to the case calling. There’s no objection.’
The complaint against Kiernan, of Kelvinside, Glasgow, says he ‘did intentionally direct a sexual verbal communication to an employee’ in that he ‘repeatedly made obscene and degrading comments’.
It also says he ‘behaved in a threatening or abusive manner likely to cause a reasonable person to suffer fear or alarm’ by shouting and swearing at the alleged victim.
Sheriff Lindsay Wood continued the case for four weeks without any plea.
Kiernan was ordained to appear at the next hearing in court.
The court session took place as the cast of Still Game started rehearsing for live shows due to start at Glasgow’s SSE Hydro next month.
Written and created by Kiernan and Hemphill, 47, this will be the second time the hit BBC programme has moved from the screen to the stage, following its string of sell-out performances in 2014.
Kiernan joined Hemphill and other show regulars, including Sanjeev Kohli, 45, for the first read-through of the script last week.
