Lulu: My secret to looking great at 68 (and it’s oh so easy)

Just make most of what you’ve got like J-Lo & Co!

SHE was only 15 when she released the song that made her famous.

But superstar Lulu has admitted that, at the beginning of her career, she definitely had more talent than good looks.

In an exclusive interview with The Scottish Mail on Sunday the Glaswegian has revealed she is far happier with her appearance as a 68-year-old than she was as a younger woman.

As she prepares to embark on the biggest tour of her career, she compares herself to other celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez, Cheryl and Victoria Beckham, who she claims are not naturally beautiful but have learned how to look the best they can.

Lulu said: ‘People say to me, “How do you do it? What do you do? What’s your secret?”. I think, if you are a beauty, a stunner when you’re young, then you don’t have to put too much effort into how you look because you just look stunning. Well, I was never a stunner so I had to work on how I looked.’

She added: ‘I look at someone like J-Lo. When she used to dance on TV in America, she was just a wee dancer in the mix with a lot of other kids. She has become the most beautiful girl because she’s learned what’s right for her hair colour, the best colours to wear, the best way to do make-up, how to dress. She is like the most stunning thing.

‘I even look at little Cheryl, who was cute. She’s become a beautiful young woman because she has learned how to make the best of herself.

‘Victoria is the same. Victoria knows exactly how to make herself look the best she can look. It’s her business.

‘In a way, we are lucky because when you are young and beautiful, beauty is more difficult to maintain as you get older.’

The singer born in Lennoxtown, Dunbartonshire, who was married to Bee Gee Maurice Gibb and then celebrity hairdresser John Frieda, revealed she struggled to keep up with the beautiful people of the showbusiness world,. She said: ‘I was always on television, even in films, and I’d look at it and think, “Oh God, that skin, it’s so spotty”. ‘I would go on holiday with Barry and Linda Gibb and they would walk into the sun and just go brown. I had freckly white skin and I’d turn bright pink in the sun. My red hair would go orange and my nose would go beetroot. It was not an attractive look. I would go with my brother and his beautiful wife and she would just put lip gloss on, because she could wear a pair of shorts, flat sandals and a T-shirt and her hair just left after being washed.

‘And I’d go, “Oh God, why not me?”. I would have to blow-dry my hair and put rollers in.’

To those hoping to emulate her look, she recommends a winter break in India. She said: ‘In January, I go to the ashram in the north, two hours outside Mumbai, but this time I went to what’s called an Ayurvedic health clinic, where you eat this amazing Indian food that suits your constitution.’

Later this year, Lulu’s All About The Music Tour will see her play 40 dates across the UK, with Scottish dates in November in Motherwell, Glenrothes, Perth and Edinburgh.
