Watch out! May is worst month for drink-driving

-

CHRISTMAS is traditionally associated with drink-driving – but May is actually the worst month for motorists failing the breath test, a report reveals.

Fifteen per cent of drivers checked by police during the past three Mays either blew positive or refused to be breathalysed.

The figure for December was just four per cent.

The study suggests that, over the May bank holidays, drivers who attend parties and barbecues are not as careful as they would be in December, when events tend to be planned and taxis booked.

The data was obtained by insurance specialist Admiral following a Freedom of Information request to police forces across the UK.

The Cambridgeshire, Kent and Northamptonshire forces had the highest percentage of drivers testing positive or refusing tests, with Cambridgeshire hitting 36.5 per cent.

Twenty-seven of Britain’s 45 forces gave figures. In those 27 areas, nearly a million drivers have been asked to give a breath test in the past three years.
