Tax bombshell that could yet hurt the Tories

-

Although the polls are predicting a landslide Tory victory in the forthcoming General Election, nothing should be taken for granted. These are very unpredictable times – just look at the Brexit result and Donald Trump elected to the White House.

For the Tories to threaten to drop tax pledges, and, worst of all, promise not to end our foreign aid target, is surely not the way to get votes from the British people. Martin Reading, Oldbury, West Midlands The Mail on Sunday got it spot on by reporting that tax promises and the pensions triple lock could be scrapped. This news is undoubtedly giving cause for concern. I have always supported the Tories but I am now seriously considering casting my vote in a different direction. I suspect millions of others, especially pensioners, may do the same. Ken Burton, Ipswich Theresa May is right to warn that a huge win for the Tories on June 8 is not a foregone conclusion. Many Tories are extremely annoyed that policies they believed would have been ditched or amended are set to remain. Carole Tucker, London So the Tories have done it again! Just as David Cameron snatched defeat from the jaws of victory at the 2010 Election with his Big Society nonsense, so Theresa May is doing the same with her own goals on taxation, pensions and foreign aid. When will they ever learn? Roy Daniels, Luton Too often pensioners are being seen as a burden, with a lack of care available and the constant blaming of the elderly for the shortage of funds in the NHS. Growing old is no longer the time to relax a little and enjoy some quality time.

Now it seems that the pensions triple lock is under threat. Although many elderly people have an occupational pension, it is not as generous as the one enjoyed by MPs. Mrs May should think again. Maggie Morse, Brynamman, Dyfed The Tories still have time to dig themselves out of the mess they have created, but they must not delay. After all, the thought that Jeremy Corbyn could become our next PM is truly terrifying. A. Brown, Surrey If the Tories win in June, Mrs May should take a stand against foreign takeovers of important British companies. The sale of our precious assets is nothing short of disgraceful.
