Stop this American revolution

-

I agree with Matthew Engel, whose piece last week said that American words are inveigling themselves into our language. Surely we need an anti-American revolution! R. Bennett, Cheltenham I deplore the word ‘gifted’ being used to mean ‘gave’. Dennis Thorp, Fallowfield, Manchester Further to your letter last week suggesting fines for incorrect use of language, may I suggest that using ‘So’ at the beginning of a sentence is added to the list. Mel Huckstep, Maidstone I find the word ‘pretty’ is wildly overused – pretty hot, pretty cold, pretty good. In fact, it’s pretty much used for everything! J. Kiff, Bristol
