Ostapenko proves a French fancy with stunning triumph in Paris —

JELENA OSTAPENKO was among the 100-1 outsiders to win the French Open, having never won a WTA Tour title before or reached the second week of a major.

Now the world No47 has burst into the ranks of Grand Slam champions, riding on a wave of high-risk tennis that eventually overwhelmed heavy favourite Simona Halep.

Rarely has Court Philippe Chatrier witnessed such a relentless display of courageous hitting as the 20-year-old Latvian produced in winning 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

‘I had no worries, this was my dream always to win here,’ she said. ‘I was just trying to play my game. I was missing a lot but I just kept trying to play my game.’
