A jibe too Phar

TIMARU mayor Damon Odey has invited Lions tour manager John Spencer to visit the place he described as a ‘one-horse gold-mining town where the gold has run out’.

Spencer made his comments in a book about the 1971 tour of New Zealand. Odey said: ‘I’d love to show him round. Our one horse was called Phar Lap and as for gold, we were the third best performing place, based on per capita, at the Olympics.’
