Ancient cathedrals, castles and kirks all given starring roles
SCOTLAND’S lush, green forests and crumbling ruins have a starring role in the series.
Doune Castle, near Stirling, doubles as the fictional Castle Leoch – the seat of Clan MacKenzie.
Also used in Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Game of Thrones, this popular filming location features prominently in the first season of Outlander.
Midhope Castle, outside South Queensferry, also makes an appearance as central character Jamie’s modest home of Lallybroch.
Holy sites grace the screen, too, such as Tibbermore Church in Perth, which stands in for Cranesmuir Church in season one.
The setting was used in a tense episode in which Claire and her friend Geillis Duncan (Lotte Verbeek) face trial for witchcraft. Elsewhere, the stunning Glencorse Old Kirk in Penicuik, Midlothian, is well known to fans as the setting for Claire and Jamie’s wedding.
With its striking high stone walls and impenetrable exterior, Linlithgow Palace in West Lothian provides the perfect stand-in for Wentworth Prison, where Jamie finds himself in the dungeons.
Meanwhile, the historic buildings in Glasgow’s George Square serve as the location for Frank’s spontaneous proposal to Claire.
The city’s famous medieval cathedral also makes an appearance, as does Edinburgh’s Royal Mile.
