In love? The question that left her in trauma
HAVING been asked ‘Are you in love?’ after her engagement to Prince Charles, Diana replied: ‘Of course we are.’ But, privately, the question and Charles’s response left her deeply traumatised.
The Prince of Wales was speaking to a reporter shortly after the announcement of the engagement in 1981 when he responded: ‘Whatever in love means.’ On the Channel Four tapes, Diana recalls the ‘ghastly’ interview, saying: ‘This ridiculous ITN man said, “Are you in love?” So I thought, “What a thick question.” I said, “Well yes of course we are”… And Charles sort of said, “Whatever in love means.” That completely threw me. And I thought, what a strange question – God. It absolutely traumatised me.’
