GLORIOUS GOODWOOD
MORE than £5million of prize-money is up for grabs at Goodwood this week when racing stages one of its most popular summer festivals. THE HIGHLIGHTS TUESDAY
Frankie Dettori missed out winning the Ascot Gold Cup on Big Orange because of injury but he is back on board as the Michael Bell-trained gelding attempts to become only the second horse to win the Goodwood Cup three times.
WEDNESDAY
Richard Fahey’s Ribchester will cement his place as Europe’s top miler if he adds the Sussex Stakes to wins in the Queen Anne Stakes and Lockinge Stakes this year. Rivals are headed by Aidan O’Brien’s English and Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Churchill.
THURSDAY
O’Brien’s Winter has three Group One wins already this season. To grab a fourth in the Nassau Stakes she must beat John Gosden’s duo Shutter Speed and So Mi Dar on her first try at 1m 2f.
FRIDAY
Take Cover has won the King George Stakes twice but some talented young sprinters, headed by Battaash and Marsha, stand between him and a third win.
SATURDAY
The six-furlong Stewards’ Cup is one of the hardest sprint handicaps to win but Roger Charlton-trained Projection is a clear 9-1 favourite in the ante-post betting after a third place in Royal Ascot’s Wokingham Stakes.
