Gangs steal 30 plane engines
POLICE across Britain are investigating a surge in aircraft engine thefts fuelled by demand in Eastern Europe.
More than 30 thefts have been reported in the past 18 months alone – though experts believe the true figure is closer to 45.
The thieves target light aircraft at local flying clubs. The engines are used as generators or broken down and sold as spare parts. Hundreds of clubs have stepped up security to tackle the wave of thefts, worth about £2million.
John Stothart, chairman of South Hams Flying Club in Devon, where four engines were recently stolen, said: ‘We believe that it’s the same gang operating around the country.’
