A HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS
IN the latest in our occasional series on the best places for a staycation, GILES MILTON checks out a spectacular treehouse in Somerset…
WHERE: Nestling between the Quantock Hills and Exmoor National Park, the Tree House near Taunton is surrounded by breathtaking natural landscape. There are plenty of country pubs nearby too.
THE PROPERTY: The Tree House lives up to its name. Suspended in a tree, built from wood and extending over two floors, it’s a mix of luxury and cosiness. There’s a wood-burning stove, hot tub and a well-appointed kitchen. The living space is generous (for a treehouse anyway), with a large master bedroom and views over surrounding fields. Kids will love it. So will grown-ups.
WHAT TO See: Exmoor is the biggest draw, with hiking trails and great pubs. Dunster Castle (and village) is a medieval time capsule, while Tarr Steps are a rare survival from prehistoric times. If you have children, Wookey Hole is a must. The hike up Selworthy Beacon is blustery and wild, so the pubs in nearby Porlock are the perfect place to rest afterwards.
WHO TO CONTACT: Premier Cottages features almost 1,000 self-catering cottages across the UK. Properties range from romantic bolt-holes to large country estates.
HOW MUCH: Prices in low season from £595 (short break) and £895 (per week); high season from £945 (short break) and £1,865 (per week). Visit premiercottages.co.uk or call the owner on 01984 656622.
VERDICT: Eccentric and unusual, the Tree House offers cosiness and comfort, even though you’re halfway up a tree.
