Mourinho and Hughes clash as United held

- By

ERIC MAXIM CHOUPO-MOTING struck twice as Stoke ended Manchester United’s perfect start to the season.

An end-to-end contest saw tempers flare on the touchline and managers Jose Mourinho and Mark Hughes fail to shake hands on the whistle, but it was a summer addition to the Potteries who stole the show.

ChoupoMoting edged Stoke in front on the 43rd minute, finishing a fine team move to open his account for the club.

Mourinho’s side found an immediate response when Paul Pogba’s header was inadvertently directed home via the back of Marcus Rashford’s head.

Romelu Lukaku then gave United the lead just before the hour mark but Choupo-Moting struck again, this time nodding home from a corner.

Having experienced a calm beginning to this campaign, Mourinho cut an irritable figure on the touchline as the result became apparent.

He clashed with Hughes, receiving a push from the Stoke manager, he gave mock applause when the home side returned a drop ball long, and at the final whistle pointedly refused to shake his opposite number’s hand. Hughes gave a sarcastic wave in response.

Mourinho refused to be drawn on the issue when asked about it afterwards and walked out of a BBC interview.

He said: ‘I don’t speak about stupid things, I’m too old for that. Stupid things are for stupid people.’
