Wright on the warpath after ‘inept’ display

- By Benjamin Palmer

ST JOHNSTONE boss Tommy Wright lacerated his players’ efforts after their 3-0 defeat to Aberdeen.

Describing the performance as the worst of his tenure in charge of the club, Wright (below) said that his players were ‘gubbed’ and deserved to be given their insipid performance.

When it was put to Wright it was surprising his tactics did not work given that they were successful in their last fixture against Hamilton, he launched into a furious monologue. ‘Don’t talk about systems,’ he said. ‘Look at the goals: a free-kick, my centre backs drop deep, we have three of them to look after one striker and we didn’t deal with it. The corner kick: that’s nothing to do with systems.

‘When players don’t pass the ball, when they don’t work hard for each other, when they give a quality side time on the ball, that’s what happens.

‘It’s probably the worst 45 minutes I’ve had in nearly 200 games here. It was inept and they know about it. You’re getting the mild version.’

Delighted Dons boss Derek McInnes was happy to see three products of the club’s youth system, Scott McKenna, Scott Wright, Frank Ross, on the pitch at full-time.

‘That pleases me,’ he said. ‘But what pleases me most is the fact we’ve responded in the past couple of games to answer to myself that we can defend with far more aggression, anger and determination than we’ve shown at times this season.’
