DE BRUYNE STRIKE SENDS OUT A MESSAGE

- By Oliver Holt

FORMER Stamford Bridge midfielder Kevin De Bruyne savoured his crucial winner as Manchester City ‘sent out a massive message’ in the title race with last night’s win at champions Chelsea.

City moved back top of the Premier League on goal difference, from local rivals Manchester United, following De Bruyne’s long-range effort in the 67th minute.

City’s Fabian Delph said: ‘We knew we had lost the previous two games to Chelsea, so this win sends out a massive message.’

De Bruyne said: ‘We played tactically a great game. It’s a nice win because it’s difficult to win here.

‘It ends a very nice month for us. It’s only the beginning but it is good to maintain the winning streak.’

City boss Pep Guardiola hailed De Bruyne and dedicated the result to full-back Benjamin Mendy, who is recovering form cruciate ligament surgery.

‘The win is the most important thing,’ said Guardiola.

‘I’m so happy for Kevin because I know how happy he is. He fights like the most humble guy for us.

‘Nothing is done in September so hopefully we can win some more. This game is for Benjamin Mendy as well.’

Chelsea lost star striker Alvaro Morata to a hamstring injury. Manager Antonio Conte said: ‘We knew it was going to be tough against City but we gave everything.’
