McDonald fires warning shot to title rivals Saints ahead of Friday’s clash

- By Euan McArthur

SCOTT McDONALD warned title rivals St Mirren to watch their backs as Dundee United geared up for Friday night’s crunch in stunning style.

Australian ace McDonald struck just before the break with team-mate Paul McMullan notching goals in either half to give Jack Ross’ leaders an early warning.

And the victory stretched United’s unbeaten league run to seven games heading into the Paisley clash.

United striker McDonald said: ‘It’s a good boost going into Friday at St Mirren. We’re looking to win it which would see us go top again. We’re going into it confident on the back of a good run.’

Csaba Laszlo’s side had the luxury of missing a second-half penalty by Billy King but the Hungarian was left cursing a knee injury to midfield dynamo Fraser Fyvie, who was carried off just before the break.

Laszlo said: ‘We are just hoping it’s not his cruciate. Fraser will have a scan next week.’

The visitors won 2-0 in the corresponding fixture back in October when Ray McKinnon was still in charge of the Tayside club, but here they were up against an entirely different beast.

After an early spell of pressure from Livvy, United took control when McMullan fired home after Tam Scobbie’s header was only partially cleared.

McDonald chipped in with a close-range finish in 37 minutes from Jamie Robson’s cross for 2-0 before winger McMullan’s smart finish with two minutes to go.

Livvy boss David Hopkin said: ‘United are the best team we’ve played this season.’
