Murty admits he’s made a move on Accies’ Docherty

- By Mark Wilson IN FLORIDA

RANGERS manager Graeme Murty confirmed the club had made an initial approach for Hamilton midfielder Greg Docherty as he targets further signings before the end of the transfer window.

The Ibrox side are set to step up their strengthening plans next week after the Florida Cup win over Corinthians in Orlando.

Docherty is high on Murty’s wanted list, while Rangers are also keen on Welsh Under-21 forward Tyler Roberts, who is currently with West Bromwich Albion.

Asked if he could expand on interest in the Accies player, Murty replied: ‘We have made an approach but that’s as far as things have gone.

‘I have said before I am not willing to talk about players who are at other clubs. We are looking to bring others in because we want the group to get stronger.

‘The more good players you have in will push others to a higher standard and it’s a challenge for the players here.

‘The players who are here have responded. There is movement, there is work behind the scenes.

‘The guys back at the training ground are working on bringing people in and improving the squad.’

Roberts, 19, has been on loan at Walsall and is out of contract with West Brom at the end of the season.

French giants Marseille are also tracking the youngster, who would cost around £300,000 in compensation.

Rangers return to Scotland after a seven-day warm weather training camp having won both of their Florida Cup matches.

‘I thought we did okay in the first half, I was pleased with parts of our possession play,’ added Murty.

‘I said to the players at half-time that good players will punish mistakes and that’s what happened. We thought we were a little bit slack. In the second half we were more forceful and it was another worthwhile exercise.

‘Any time a forward gets two goals he’s a happy guy. Alfredo got the man of the match, too, so he is delighted.

‘It’s about pushing the squad and making everyone better and if we can take this attitude back to Glasgow with us it will be good — because in my opinion there is more to come from this group.

‘I think our attacking options are broader than they have been.’
