... you’re more like one of the two dodgy Randolphs!

-

LORD RANDOLPH CHURCHILL WINSTON’S FATHER

Like Mr Johnson, Lord Randolph Churchill was a maverick known more for his wit and ambition than statesmanlike skills, but believed he was destined to be PM.

Like Mr Johnson, when he finally won a top Cabinet post – Chancellor in Lord Randolph’s case, Foreign Secretary in Boris’s case – there were soon rumours that he might resign because he thought that his talents deserved more.

Unlike Mr Johnson, Lord Randolph DiD threaten to quit as Chancellor in 1886, expecting to be begged to stay on, but his gamble backfired. His resignation was accepted, his career never recovered and he died, aged 45, reportedly as a result of syphilis.

RANDOLPH CHURCHILL WINSTON’S SON

Like Mr Johnson, Sir Winston’s son Randolph was a twicemarried blond journalist turned MP who had a string of affairs, wrote a biography of Winston Churchill, and was desperate to earn a fortune and become PM.

Like Mr Johnson, who is accused of undermining ‘weak’ Mrs May, Randolph Churchill was accused of sniping at ‘weak’ Tory PM Sir Anthony eden. And like Mr Johnson, Randolph Churchill was a ‘charmer’ but was mistrusted by fellow Tories.

But unlike Mr Johnson, who jogs and cycles to stay healthy, Randolph Churchill drank two bottles of whisky a day and died in 1968 after being diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver.
