Magath declares a major interest to be next Scots manager

- By

THREE-TIMES Bundesligawinning manager Felix Magath is desperate to meet the Scottish FA and discuss becoming the new manager of the national team.

Magath (right), who played against Scotland in the World Cup of 1982 in Mexico, completed a double double with Bayern Munich in 2006 before leading Wolfsburg to the title in 2009 and he reckons that his no-nonsense problemsolving approach is just what is needed at Hampden.

Scottish-based agent Derek Day, who has been working with Magath’s German representatives, said: ‘Felix remembers playing against Scotland when they regularly got to World Cup finals and had strong club sides in Europe. Something has obviously gone wrong and he would like to help fix that.

‘He has fixed issues at all the clubs he has been at and would welcome the chance to now do that at an international level.’

The 64-year-old started his off-thepitch career at Hamburg in a general manager role shortly after facing Gordon Strachan and the rest of the Scots in West Germany’s 2-1 success at the Estadio Corregidora, when injury ended his career with a total of 43 caps amassed.

Day, who met Magath’s German agent this week as part of the talks to bring Florian Kamberi to Hibs, added: ‘The Scottish FA are aware that Felix would like to speak to them about becoming the new head coach. He has the skills, qualifications, experience, desire and track record in winning that would help Scotland move back up the way as an international team. In recent years Magath, who bought shares in Rangers as he toyed with the idea of launching a bid to become their general manager, became the first German to manage in the English Premier League when he took charge of an already doomed Fulham before heading to China where he took control of Shandong Luneng.
