New Zealand, the peak of perfection

-

READY for that big trip you’ve always been promising yourself? Would-be world travellers who choose New Zealand for their special adventure will find it one of those rare destinations that totally live up to the hype.

This inspirational country, often voted the best destination in the world to visit, lays on such a show of stupendous sights that it thrills at every turn.

Who could fail to be awed by Milford Sound’s epic vistas? Not to mention a photogenic proliferation of peaks, dreamy fjords, pristine lakes, gleaming glaciers and steamy geysers, as well as plentiful lowland pleasures.

Couple all this with perfect places to stay, great service, ease of getting around and the reassurance of being greeted in our native tongue – albeit with a welcoming Kiwi twang – and you are in for a memorable adventure.

ESCORTED ITINERARY

SURELY the best way to see New Zealand is on a comprehensive escorted itinerary – and that’s just what you get with Distant Journeys’ 23-day Magnificent New Zealand Tour.

Under the wing of a friendly, knowledgeable tour manager, you’ll see the best of the country’s scenery, vibrant cities and rich Maori culture, all at a leisurely pace allowing freedom to explore.

The tour starts with exciting stopovers in either Singapore, Dubai or Bangkok before introducing Auckland, the City of Sails, and the beautiful Bay of Islands, where a cruise is included amid dolphins and pretty bays.

Soon you are in extraordinary Rotorua, home to thermal wonders. Gaze in awe at gurgling mud pools, steaming terraces and spurting geysers, and perhaps bathe in thermal pools or plaster yourself in mud at the Polynesian Spa – it’s great for the skin.

Later, you’re invited to attend a hangi (Maori feast) and catch a cultural performance with traditional song, dance and a blood-curdling haka (war dance).

Christchurch is where you’ll be boarding the TranzAlpine Express, one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world, spanning deep gorges and ice-fed rivers as it cuts through the breathtaking Southern Alps. You’re heading towards the famous Franz Josef Glacier, which you will be able to walk on or even fly over.

After witnessing this awesome spectacle, it’s time to get your kicks in the adventure capital of Queenstown, where a Shotover jet-boat ride could see you flying through a craggy canyon. For a less adrenaline-fuelled experience, take a lake cruise or explore the world-class Otago wineries.

Day 18 could see you sail away in the company of dolphins in impressive Milford Sound, where nature’s vastness has been carved by glaciers and cloaked in ancient rainforest, and waterfalls cascade down the sheer cliffs.

Distant Journeys has included an overnight stay on board the wonderful Milford Mariner here – a real highlight. Sail the full length of New Zealand’s most spectacular fjord, with the option to go exploring in a kayak or tender craft with a guide, before having dinner on the boat.

Dunedin, known as the Edinburgh of the South, boasts restored Victorian and Edwardian buildings, and botanical gardens.

And Day 21 will see you back in Christchurch, marvelling at the huge Moeraki Boulders on Hampden Beach, the subject of an intriguing Maori legend. All good things must come to an end – but your epic journey need not be over just yet. There are options to enjoy a homebound stopover in Hong Kong, Bangkok, Singapore or Dubai from only £49pp for those booking before March 15 and travelling after September 1.

If you’d prefer to see something of Australia, Distant Journeys is offering a three-night stopover in Sydney from £319pp. There’s even an option to stay in beautiful Bali, or why not tag on a full tour of Australia while you are exploring under southern skies?

There aren’t many places where travellers are so well catered for when it comes to man-made and natural splendours. But New Zealand has it all, making it a place where you can relax and enjoy your travels. With Distant Journeys taking care of everything – from flights, transfers and guides to many meals and unforgettable experiences – you are in for a truly magnificent and seamless adventure.
