Webb ‘hurt and angered’ after Wales career ends

- By Nik Simon

RHYS WEBB has opened up about the agony of seeing his Wales career come to a premature end.

The British and Irish Lion limped out of Warren Gatland’s Wales training camp with a knee injury and is unlikely to play again for his country due to the new selection policy imposed on players playing outwith their home nation.

‘It was one of the hardest decisions of my life,’ says Webb. ‘I knew this Six Nations was my last chance to wear the Wales jersey, but it wasn’t fair for me to carry on when I wasn’t fully fit. Saying goodbye to the boys was tough. I’ll miss it.’

Since announcing his move from Ospreys to Toulon in October, the scrum-half has been caught in the crossfire of a national debate as the move will end his Wales career after the WRU held him to ransom over their new 60-cap selection policy.

‘It was heart-breaking,’ says Webb. ‘When I found out, I was hurt and angry. The Ospreys never mentioned the policy change. It would have been courteous after 11 years of service. I won’t play for Wales anymore after I move to France. It’s sad because every child around here dreams of playing for Wales, but there’s a lot to look forward to. For me, moving to Toulon is like going to Real Madrid or Barcelona.’

Had Webb not missed 29 Tests through injury, he’d have reached the 60-cap quota. He is widely regarded as the best No 9 in Wales.

‘It’s going to be tough to watch, but some of my best friends play for Wales and I want them to do well,’ he added. ‘All I can do is wish the lads all the best.’
