It’s ... but not as we know it

Plaid, staid? No way, as checks are given an outrageous twist

- By Sally Rose

IT’S a Highland fling – but never quite danced in this fashion before. The trend for plaid is back (did it ever go away?) and at fashion shows from New York to Milan the Tartan Army has been firing up the catwalk with a new urban look.

The traditional Scottish hallmark has been reimagined by some of fashion’s biggest names and rising stars for womenswear and menswear.

This year sees bright and colourful interpretations of the classic look, with new, bold styling choices and grungy looks, backed by eyecatching accessories. Tartan, windowpane, Madras, Prince of Wales, tattersall and plaid patterns all popped up at recent shows, from Bella Hadid dressed in a red tartan jacket on the runway at the Dsquared2 show during Milan Men’s Fashion Week to 28-year-old Glaswegian designer Charles Jeffrey’s stunning ‘Loverboy’ tartan on a suit worn by a model with a faceprint and a conical wig in London.

It’s clear low-key tweeds and familiar winter checks have been temporarily replaced by Young Pretenders.
