MELROSE MAKE MERRY AS LEAGUE TITLE IS CLINCHED

-

CRAIG JACKSON, cousin of Scotland international Ruaridh Jackson, was the Melrose hero in a man-ofthe-match display for his team as they lifted the Premiership league title.

The centre put over three penalties, a conversion and set up the try for Grant Runciman to help his side to victory in the league play-off final against Ayr.

Melrose were 13-9 down at the break but came back to win a pulsating encounter.

Ayr’s try came from Glasgow Warriors winger Rory Hughes, who had been released front the professional ranks to play.

Their other points came from the boot of fly-half Scott Lyle, who out over two penalties and a conversion. Prop Robin Hislop didn’t help his side by picking up a yellow card just before the break.

With eight minutes left, Melrose brought on Ross Ford, who had been released from Edinburgh to take part. That steadied the ship and slowed play down for the home side as they ran down the clock.

Melrose hung on for a narrow win that led to huge celebrations at full-time.
