SO WHERE DID IT ALL GO WRONG FOR THE £500m BOSS?
WPP boss Sir Martin Sorrell is set for a showdown tomorrow when he plans to attend a board meeting despite an ongoing investigation into his conduct.
He is braced to be ousted by the board of WPP, the FTSE 100 advertising giant he set up from scratch more than 30 years ago. The board, led by chairman Roberto Quarta, launched a probe into Sorrell late last month after an allegation of ‘personal misconduct’ was made against him. He has denied ‘an allegation of financial impropriety’.
The investigation could be wrapped up as early as this week and friends believe the tycoon is prepared for the worst.
A source said that even if the allegations are found to have no basis, ‘he could just say “s** it” and resign anyway’.
Sources close to both Sorrell and the company acknowledge it may be difficult for his working relationship with the board to recover from the investigation.
Both sides are working through separate lawyers and PR firms. Sorrell believes news of the probe must have been leaked by a board member.
Tomorrow’s board meeting has been in the diary for several months.
