Third teenager is killed in fall from walkway at Magaluf hotel

- By Peter Henn

A TEENAGER has become the third Briton this year to die at a Magaluf apartment block after falling from a so-called ‘walkway of death’.

Thomas Channon, 18, plunged 70ft to his death from a walkway at the Eden Roc complex in the Spanish holiday resort early on Thursday morning.

The student had just taken his A-levels and was on his first holiday abroad with friends to celebrate finishing his exams.

One of the neighbours at the home he shared in Rhoose, South Wales, with midwife mother Ceri, 49, company director father John, 67, and younger brother James, said: ‘They are such a lovely family and always very friendly. Thomas and his brother are lovely boys and always very polite. It is just so sad.’

It is understood Mr Channon became separated from friends and, as he tried to find his way back to the Hotel Florida at 4am, stumbled over a wall protecting a walkway from a cliff drop.

Other parents from the tragic teenager’s friends’ group are out in Spain. One, who asked not to be named, said: ‘We went to where Thomas fell and the wall is way too low. It’s about knee-height.

‘Something has to happen now. It shouldn’t take all these kids dying to make sure proper precautions are in place.’

In April, 19-year-old bar worker Natalie Cormack, of West Kilbride, Ayrshire, died after falling from a walkway at the building.

Last month, Tom Hughes, 20, of Wrexham, died after jumping over a wall, unaware of the drop.

British diplomats have met local leaders in a bid to stop falls at the resort, renowned for its boisterous nightlife.
