We need more bosses like Gareth

-

Many years ago I had a boss who was the kindest and most mild-mannered and polite man I have ever met.

Not once did any of his staff take advantage of this. In fact, we all did all we could for him – sometimes you know someone is in charge without them having to tell you.

England football manager Gareth Southgate has shown that you can be like this – not a spitting, moaning, groaning loudmouth with a big ego – and achieve great results.

The upshot of this for me was that, for the first time in a very long time, I have actually wanted England to win. Being mildmannered does not mean you are weak, and speaking politely does not mean you are pompous. But I wonder how many failed to see Southgate’s potential before his success because of his gentle demeanour. Strong, kind leadership works. It allows staff to be unafraid to take reasonable risks. So, well done Gareth for bringing this management style to the fore. There are many shouting in support for the change you have brought. T. Thompson, Banbury, Oxfordshire
