Accies are shell-shocked by Annan and super sub Smith

LEAGUE TWO Annan Athletic stunned Premiership side Hamilton Accies after a 1-0 win at Galabank sealed a shock victory in Group F of the Betfred Cup.

Aidan Smith was only on the pitch for three minutes but he netted the only goal in the 64th minute to seal the major upset.

Elsewhere in the southern section, Shea Gordon scored twice in the first six minutes as Partick Thistle claimed a 2-0 win at Stenhousemuir in Group E.

Stephen Dobbie grabbed a brace for Queen of the South in a thrilling 5-3 victory over Stranraer and Edinburgh City edged out Clyde on penalties in the other Group G game. In Group H, Dumbarton won the shoot-out over Spartans.

There were shocks in the northern section, too. Falkirk lost 1-0 at home to Montrose in Group B, while Dundee United lost 5-3 on penalties at home to Arbroath in Group A. Ross County beat Elgin City in the other opening Group A tie.

Sofien Moussa netted a double in Dundee’s 4-0 win at Stirling Albion and Peterhead won on spot-kicks at Brechin City in Group D.

In Group C, Cowdenbeath won 2-0 at Raith Rovers, while Inverness beat Cove by the same scoreline.
