STANLEY MATTHEWS, son of the Stoke, Blackpool and England winger of the same name, was the last Briton to win the Wimbledon Boys’ Championship, in 1962. The 16-year-old beat Russia’s Alexander Metreveli — who would go on to lose to Jan Kodes in the men’s final in 1973.
