A filthy mansion, stuffed with money

-

WHEN Pattie Boyd moved into Clapton’s mansion, she found a state of grimy chaos.

The dozens of pairs of designer boots and shoes in his wardrobes were scuffed and dirty. His shirts and sweaters lay in a tangled heap in the bath. As Pattie explored, she came upon drawers and boxes full of mail Eric had never bothered to open even when the letters clearly contained payments.

She realised his naivety in money matters when she found a cheque for £5,000, but he refused to let it be paid into his bank account, saying: ‘Just having the cheque is enough.’

The only money with any reality for him was the weekly £200 in a brown envelope, delivered to him by his manager’s book-keeper, Gladys.
