TAYLOR CAN RIVAL JOSHUA FOR RIGHT TO BE BRITAIN’S RING KING

ANTHONY JOSHUA is the poster boy for British boxing but the world heavyweight champion may soon have a rival for the title.

According to German promoter Nisse Sauerland — one of the prime movers behind the World Boxing Super Series — Scotland’s Josh Taylor is capable of eventually upstaging Joshua in terms of nationwide appeal.

Having persuaded Taylor and his manager Barry McGuigan to sign up to the WBSS, Sauerland is excited by the prospect of the Edinburgh super-lightweight becoming a global superstar.

He said: ‘I’ve watched Josh in the gym and seen him fight, including his most recent bout against Viktor Postol, who had a lot to give, and I think that fight made him.

‘He’s so tall for a superlightweight, you wonder how he manages to make the weight, as he’s a lot heavier than the other guy when he comes to the ring.

‘He uses his range well and is a vicious puncher. We also saw in the Postol fight that he can take a shot and you need a good chin to be a top boxer.

‘Honestly, I haven’t spotted any weaknesses. He also seems very settled in London and has one of the best trainers in the world in Shane McGuigan.’

Taylor is due to make his WBSS debut in a quarter-final match-up with American Ryan Martin at the SSE Hydro on November 3.
