Hero Salah was never worried by barren run

- By Ian Herbert

MOHAMED SALAH insists his slow start to the season was never a worry after his goal kept Liverpool neck-and-neck with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.

The Egyptian grabbed his 50th goal in English football — and his fourth goal in nine games — to help Jurgen Klopp’s men scrape past a stubborn Huddersfield before shrugging off fears about his form after a four-game drought.

Asked if he had fretted over his slow start to the new campaign on the goals front, Salah said: ‘I’m not worried. For me, the most important thing is the team gets the points. So I’m not worried.

‘It’s a tough game but we got the three points, that’s the most important thing. We had to fight.

‘It’s a good feeling to get the win. But the most important thing is that the team gets points.’

Salah’s goal midway through the first half was his first in five matches, but it was a far from convincing victory for Klopp’s side, who equalled their best start to a Premier League season with this victory.

Much of that toil was down to Huddersfield, who matched their opponents for long periods, only to still be left searching for a killer touch.

David Wagner’s side hit a post through Jonathan Hogg and had an effort ruled out for offside as they set an unwanted record of failing to score in seven straight home league games.

Neither side had an attempt on goal when Liverpool broke the deadlock in the 24th minute with two incisive passes and a superb finish.

The visitors had just started to build some pressure by retaining possession when Joe Gomez’s ball into Xherdan Shaqiri split Huddersfield down the middle.

The Swiss midfielder then spotted Salah’s darting run into the penalty area and he slipped the ball inside for the Egyptian to steer beyond Jonas Lossl and inside the far post with the outside of his left foot.

Wagner will rue the fact that his side failed to take advantage of a Liverpool who were a shadow of their best, with Klopp having one eye on the Champions League clash with Red Star Belgrade at Anfield on Wednesday — he left Georginio Wijnaldum and Roberto Firmino on the bench.

The look on Wanger’s face told its own story when Steve Mounie blasted high into the stand after opportunity knocked 10 minutes from time.
