Tackling Nicola is never funny
WE may be prepared to put up with our politicians being boring or even stupid, but we tend to be wary when they’re funny. Jackson Carlaw is proving an able interim Scots Tory leader during Ruth Davidson’s maternity leave and in last week’s First Minister’s Questions he diligently exposed the Scottish Government’s lack of funding for GP practices. However, his aides admit they have had to curb his natural inclination to find a joke in every situation, partly because some issues are too serious – and partly because they believe Nicola Sturgeon ‘does not really do humour’. Ouch!
WHEN Miss Sturgeon added Richard Lochhead to her Cabinet as a late replacement for Gillian Martin – deemed unsuitable after blogging about ‘hairy-knuckled, lipstick-wearing transgender laydees’ – he had to swot up quickly on the Higher Education brief. So how did Mr Lochhead do this? At the bar, apparently, during a trip to his alma mater, Strathclyde University: ‘I went up to Level Eight, which is where I went to watch all the gigs with my mates’. Cheers.
