Maddison delighted to atone for diving fiasco

-

JAMES MADDISON bounced back after being shown a red card last weekend for diving by helping Leicester City to a 2-0 win over Watford.

Jamie Vardy had opened the scoring from the penalty spot on 12 minutes before Maddison finished a swift counter-attack by volleying home.

Maddison said: ‘That goal was right up there, especially after a disappointing week last week.

‘I knew the best way to bounce back was to get a goal. It was a good team goal, a counter-attack and luckily I had the quality to tuck it away.

‘I made a mistake last week and I was the first one to hold my hands up. I needed to make an impact to make amends and, thankfully, I did that.

‘Hopefully that is in the past now.’

Visiting midfielder Etienne Capoue was given his marching orders for a two-footed lunge on Kelechi Iheanacho late on.

Newcastle’s recent revival came to a halt as West Ham ran out 3-0 winners at St James’ Park.

Javier Hernandez scored either side of half-time before Felipe Anderson added some gloss to the scoreline in the dying minutes.

Crystal Palace recorded their first home win of the season after a 2-0 defeat of Burnley.

James McArthur opened the scoring on 16 minutes before Andros Townsend doubled their advantage with 13 minutes left to play.

Florin Andone grabbed his first goal in English football as Brighton came from behind to beat 10-man Huddersfield 2-1.

Mathias Jorgensen had given the Terriers a first-minute lead before Steve Mounie was shown red for a high tackle on Yves Bissouma just after the half hour.

Brighton made their hosts pay as Shane Duffy levelled in firsthalf injury time and Andone got the winner.
