Levein not expecting any winter transfers
CRAIG LEVEIN admits he has no plans to delve into the January transfer market following the arrival of 18 new players during the summer.
The Hearts boss was the busiest of all the Premiership managers at the start of the campaign and despite seeing his side’s charge at the topflight summit being derailed by debilitating injuries, the 54year-old envisages a relatively quiet month.
Striker David Vanecek is one player who will arrive at the turn of the year after agreeing a pre-contract deal from Czech club Teplice six months ago.
Levein also points to having captain Christophe Berra, Steven Naismith, John Souttar, Uche Ikpeazu and Jamie Brandon all fit again by the time Hearts return from the winter break as a reason for not needing to add any more fresh faces.
‘I would be very surprised if we do any business at all in January, other than Vanecek,’ said Levein.
‘I have got Jamie Brandon back in full training and we have Naisy, Uche, Christophe and John all back by January.
‘Then you have Vanecek, so that is six quality players that we don’t have at our disposal just now, so I don’t have to do more work, really — touch wood.’
Levein (above) does have one eye on the future, however, having opened talks over a new deal with Northern Ireland right-back Michael Smith, who is out of contract next summer.
The 30-year-old joined from Peterborough United 18 months ago and has become a recognised starter in the side.
Levein added: ‘I have had a chat with his agent and we are trying to get something sorted.
‘He is very reliable and those sort of players are valuable, so we will try to get something sorted. He is a good to have around, he is straightforward and easy to deal with.’
Levein, meanwhile, reckons a visit of Steven Gerrard’s side today will help ease the nerves that have built up over a fivegame winless and scoreless run that has seen them slip to third place — three points adrift of leaders Celtic.
He added: ‘Playing one of the two big Glasgow teams at home always brings extra to the game. I think the occasion itself will help us, being at home helps.
‘I feel the game should suit us and I am hoping for a victory to kick us back on track again.
‘I think the atmosphere takes away the nerves. Also Rangers will probably be favourites to win this game and there is a different pressure when you are favourites.’
