Rennie revels in sensational show from his second string
DAVE RENNIE admits he now has a major selection headache ahead of Glasgow Warriors’ trip to face Lyon in the European Champions Cup next weekend.
The head coach was without most of his key players last night, affording them rest after their involvement with Scotland in the autumn Tests.
But Rennie’s makeshift XV produced an outstanding display, winning a match in which they played over an hour with 14 men.
Brandon Thomson, who is essentially third-choice fly-half, scored 24 of their 29 points in a terrific personal display.
Tim Swinson and George Turner excelled in the forward pack, with Nick Grigg and Stafford McDowall also continuing their blossoming partnership in the midfield.
With the resumption of European duties now upon them, Rennie admits that some of the second-string players have now earned the chance to keep their jersey for the trip to France.
‘It is a good headache to have,’ he said. ‘There is a handful of guys who played in this match who will be rewarded next week. What it says is that we’ve worked really hard on development and creating competition for places.
‘The group of guys who didn’t play in this match — most of them played against Cardiff last time out and were outstanding.
‘The guys are really standing up and putting their hands up for selection. They’ve been consistently good.’
