Time to see what Rangers are made of

-

THEY often lose their discipline. Some might even suggest that they occasionally lose their bottle.

The big question Steven Gerrard’s Rangers side have to answer, though, will be posed again at Rapid Vienna on Thursday. When it comes to the games that really, really matter, do they know how to win?

So far, the evidence is against them. There’s only been one Old Firm fixture so far this term and they failed to turn up.

In three meetings with Aberdeen, the team that still deserves to be regarded as the second force despite a mixed campaign, they have recorded two defeats and a draw.

Yes, they did withstand a late barrage in the Europa League play-offs against Ufa despite having two men sent off in the 1-1 return leg and this excursion in UEFA competition has generally been successful, but it would be sore to lose out on a place in the knockout stage having come so far.

That Rangers are even in contention at home and abroad points to progress under Gerrard, who inherited a shambles. However, it is still hard to judge quite how far they have travelled.

Vienna and then Celtic’s visit to Ibrox will tell us for sure.
