LEG PAIN? DO THE KNEEL AND STRETCH

-

EVERY time you bend, run, jump or turn, you rely on a muscle you’ve probably never heard of. It’s called the sartorius muscle and it is the longest in the human body, running from the pelvis to the inside of the knee.

Sitting for long periods with crossed or raised legs can quickly lead to damage and burning pain all the way down the inner legs.

People who play sporting activities that require lots of sprinting and turning, such as netball and basketball, are also at risk of a sore sartorius.

This simple kneeling exercise can help to keep it in shape.

Place two yoga blocks or thick books on the floor, kneel with your feet either side of them and lower your bottom on to the objects.

The idea is to gradually reduce the distance between your bottom and the floor by removing one of the blocks or books at a time.

Once you’re comfortable on one book or block, replace it with a rolled-up towel. This will ensure that you sink lower, increasing the stretch.

Sit for as long as you can, then remove the towel and lower your hips towards the floor so you end up sitting on the floor.
