CASH IN THE ATTIC

- By Toby Walne

EVERY week TOBY WALNE gives the low-down on the value of forgotten treasures that may be gathering dust in your attic.

FESTIVE music from the past can fetch a small fortune. A 1957 Elvis Christmas Album by RCA Victor, issued on red vinyl with a gold sticker, is now worth £1,200 while the Beatles Christmas Album (1970) released by Apple Records sells for up to £400.

The 1971 John Lennon single Happy Xmas (War is Over) can fetch £150. An unusual single rarely played these days is I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas by Gayla Peevey. Rare 10-inch 78rpm discs from her 1953 Columbia release fetch £100. The biggest selling Christmas hit of all time is Bing Crosby’s White Christmas – the Irving Berlin classic sold more than 100 million copies. An early 78rpm from 1942, issued by Decca Records, only costs £15.

Modern festive treats include Under The Mistletoe by Justin Bieber. Widely released on CD, only a few vinyl copies were ever produced by Island Records in 2011 – and are worth £20.
