Price check... is German chain REALLY as cheap as it claims?

-

ALDI boss Giles Hurley claims his food shops are 20 per cent cheaper than rivals. But is this true?

Analysis by respected trade magazine The Grocer shows the average Aldi shopping basket – containing 33 items, including apples, Maltesers, bread and milk – costs £37.23.

The average cost across Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose was £47.04. This means shoppers would spend 26 per cent more on average. But that average is raised by Waitrose. Aldi’s nearest rival for cheapness is Asda, where the basket costs £40.84 – only 10 per cent more expensive.
