Rennie won’t rue missed chance

- By Calum Crowe

DAVE RENNIE insists Glasgow are still the masters of their own destiny heading into the final round of Heineken Champions Cup fixtures.

The Warriors put Lyon to the sword at Scotstoun yesterday to secure a third successive pool victory, but were unable to collect a bonus point.

They still sit in a healthy enough position and nine points from a possible 10 in the doubleheader with the French side is a good return.

But, depending on how results pan out elsewhere, Glasgow could go into their final two games next month needing to pick up five points to progress.

They play Cardiff Blues at home in the first match. They will, of course, look to take a maximum haul from that.

If they can’t quite manage that, though, they could travel to face Saracens at Allianz Park on the final day requiring at least a losing bonus point. After a victory in some horrendous, greasy conditions yesterday, Rennie said: ‘Sitting in the coaches box in the dry, we were scratching our heads over some of the errors but it was hard (because of the weather).

‘We’re happy. We’ve got ourselves in a good spot in Europe, our destiny is in our own hands and we’re looking forward to the Cardiff game next.

‘We’ll know more by the end of round five but, if we knock Cardiff over we’ll get 18. And, if we get a bonus point, we’ll get 19 and that’ll be pretty close I’d imagine.’

Rennie looks like he could be facing problems at hooker ahead of next week’s 1872 Cup clash with Edinburgh.

George Turner left the field in discomfort yesterday, with Fraser Brown already facing 10 weeks out after knee surgery earlier this week.

‘George caught his ankle when he got caught in an awkward position and slipped. There may be a bit of concussion in there as well,’ said Rennie.

‘They come in groups, don’t they? We’ll put out our strongest possible side next week.’
