Debacle ‘derailing Indyref 2’

The Scottish Mail on Sunday - - Week Civil War Hit SNP -

THE civil war engulfing the SNP leadership has left members ‘utterly depressed’ and threatens to derail lingering independence hopes, party sources admit.

The SNP has been left reeling by the conflict between its two biggest figures, Alex Salmond and Nicola Sturgeon.

While he still faces a criminal probe, she has been left fighting for her political future, and insiders fear there may be worse to come.

One senior source said: ‘The key thing is, is there a smoking gun? I don’t know the answer to that.’ Just a week ago Miss Sturgeon said she would restart her independence campaign ‘very soon’. Now that seems like a distant dream to her rank and file. The source said: ‘They are utterly depressed. They think the leadership needs to get control of the situation.

‘This could completely derail the government in terms of getting its message across. If you launch an independence campaign in the middle of all this, it’s going to be very difficult to motivate people.’
