Watch out, there’s blizzards about

- By Paul Drury

FROM blizzards to black ice, Scotland will be engulfed by severe winter weather today.

The worst of the conditions will be felt in the north, where up to six inches of extra snow could accumulate on higher routes.

A yellow Met Office warning for blizzards and ice for the region kicked in at 6pm last night and lasts until noon today.

Even at lower levels, two inches of snow could land anywhere in Central, Tayside, Fife, Grampian, Highlands and Islands.

The Met Office said: ‘Rain across northern Scotland on Saturday evening will turn increasingly to snow, at first over hills and then down to lower levels through the course of Saturday night.

‘Strong northerly winds will lead to blizzard conditions and drifting over high ground, where 10 to 15 cm of fresh snow may accumulate. At lower levels, 2 to 5 cm (up to two inches) is possible, mainly inland and above 100m.’

In the south of Scotland, a separate yellow warning covers the early hours of Sunday morning and lasts until 11am. Overnight rain is forecast to freeze, creating difficult ground conditions for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.

The warning area includes south west Scotland, Lothian and Borders and parts of Strathclyde to the south of Glasgow.

Luke Miall of the Met Office said: ‘There’s a real wintry flavour to things as we go through Sunday. There’s a real Arctic blast coming down from the north. The wind will cut right through you.

‘Daytime temperatures will show as 3C to 5C (37-41F) but it will feel more like -3C or -4C.’
