Jilly’s right to whine about arrogant men

-

Wine critic Jilly Goolden (above) said last week that she has seen men who know nothing about wine grab the list in a restaurant before her.

How arrogant of a man to do that, thinking they know better than an expert. There are so many male show-offs out there that I despair.

Why can’t they just accept that we can all be experts in certain areas, and by playing together as a team, we will all be winners. J. McLean, Manchester Women may now be buying 80 per cent of the wine sold in the UK, as you reported last week, but you didn’t exactly specify the types of wine they were buying. My bet is Lambrini, Lambrusco and Blue Nun. In my experience, women drink wine with as much knowledge about what they are knocking back as men who drink lager. C. Green, Leeds ‘I can remember when women overtook men as the buyers of wine in the 1990s,’ Jilly said. ‘And it is interesting that the figure has now increased so much.’ I think Jilly sees the dominance of women in buying wine as a positive move. For me it’s the opposite. It just shows that nothing changes in this world – it’s still women who have to do most of the shopping. C. Dodd, Durham
