A school head in a class of his own

-

How refreshing to read about Richard Tutt, the head teacher who is not afraid to take action to improve his school.

For too long now we have read of disruptive behaviour, disrespect and lack of discipline in our classrooms. It is time to return to good old-fashioned values, such as dressing smartly and not talking in corridors, which Mr Tutt advocates. In the scheme of things, school life is such a short period. It should be a time for learning, not just academic subjects but also manners and skills for life.

Where did we lose our way? When I was in school, pupils respected their teachers without question. We also wore our uniform with pride.

Now, after Mr Tutt’s successful intervention, both staff and students at Magna Academy in Poole can concentrate on the job in hand without fear. Of course, they have rules and standards to observe. But they also have self-respect and pride.

Children are our future, and they will make better and more successful citizens with heads like Mr Tutt. Well done, Sir! S. Martin, East Preston, West Sussex
